Teen anxiety is on the rise, now affecting an estimated 80 percent of high schoolers. Among students who do not have generalized anxiety disorder, test anxiety has doubled in the past 10 years. More than 40% of teen girls and more than 35% of teen boys report suffering from moderate test anxiety, and 20% suffer from more extreme symptoms. Experts believe the numbers are actually significantly higher, with boys in particular underreporting.

How do you know if your teen is suffering from test anxiety? Symptoms are both physical and emotional, like those of performance anxiety among musicians, and can result in test results that are lower than their peers', despite mastery of material, good study habits, and adequate academic planning.

This workshop introduces students to common symptoms in the first session, then teaches them ways to cope with and reduce their anxiety, as well as how to rediscover the joy of learning for learning's sake. Along the way, they begin to discover who they are and who they'd like to be as they move toward college and young adult life. It concludes with a parent-teen session on facilitating productive dialogue about both school and the college admissions journey, relying on a growth mindset philosophy.

Although this workshop is specifically designed to help teens who are already struggling with test and academic-related anxiety, it is also a great way for teens to prepare for the stress that accompanies standardized college admissions tests and college applications. By learning anxiety-reducing skills prior to the onset of college application madness, they will be able to enjoy their last years of high school and at home instead of seeing them as a frantic scramble toward college admission.

Costs: $250 per teen plus $50 for one parent to attend the first and last sessions ($75 total for two parents at the last session).
